If you’ve been doing SEO for a while, you must be comfortable reading a search performance report.
You know what impressions, clicks, and average positions mean and what to do when they move.
But the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools plays by different rules, and applying the same lens to it will lead you to the wrong conclusions.
Here’s a clear explanation of how the two types of reporting differ, why those differences matter, and how to think about each one without conflating them.
They measure different kinds of visibility
Bing Search reporting shows how your pages perform in traditional results: impressions, clicks, average position, and CTR.
AI Performance reporting measures something different — how often your pages are cited inside AI-generated answers like Copilot. A citation means your content helped shape the answer, even if no one visited your site.
These are parallel tracks. A page can rank well but never be cited, or rank modestly yet be cited often because it fits AI answer formats. The signals overlap, but they’re not the same.
The role of ‘position’ is gone
In traditional SEO reporting, position is one of the most-watched metrics. Ranking first vs fifth vs fifteenth has a direct, measurable impact on how much traffic you get.
AI Performance reporting has no position metric. When Copilot cites your page, it’s not because you ranked first for a query. It is because the AI determined your content was a useful source for the answer it was constructing. There’s no rank 1, 2, or 3. You’re either cited, or you’re not. And even when you are cited, the user might not see your link prominently, as it may appear as a small reference at the bottom of an AI-generated summary.
This makes the optimisation game different. Chasing a higher position doesn’t apply here. Instead, the focus shifts to whether your content is structured in a way that makes it easy for AI systems to extract and use (clear answers, logical organisation, specific and credible information.)
Clicks mean something different
In traditional SEO, a click means someone chose your result from a list and visited your page. It reflects how compelling your title and meta description were in a competitive search results page.
In AI Performance reporting, a click happens after a user reads an AI-generated answer that cites your page and decides to dig deeper. They’re already partially satisfied and want more detail, a different level of intent and expectation.
So a low AI CTR isn’t necessarily a problem. Many AI-cited queries are fully answered in the summary, and users simply move on. That’s how AI search works, not a sign your content failed.
Side-by-side comparison
The optimisation strategies differ too
Traditional SEO focuses on ranking signals: backlinks, domain authority, keyword alignment, title tags, meta descriptions, and page speed, all aimed at winning placement in search results.
AI citation optimisation is different. AI systems prioritize content that clearly answers specific questions, presents credible information, and is easy to parse. Pages structured around real questions, with clear headings and direct answers near the top, tend to earn more citations than pages optimized mainly for keyword density or link building.
Authority still matters in both. Strong domains are more likely to rank and be cited. The overlap exists, but the weighting of factors shifts significantly between organic ranking and AI citation performance.
You need both reports
It’s easy to see AI Performance as replacing traditional SEO reporting — but they measure different channels, and both matter. Organic search still drives most traffic for most sites. AI citations are growing, but they’re not dominant, and their data is less complete due to privacy thresholds and reporting delays.
The right approach is to read them together. Traditional reporting shows performance in the established search landscape. AI Performance shows visibility in the emerging one. Pages that perform well in both are best positioned as the balance shifts.
